Our Philosophy
Each child is special. His/her genes, experiences and personal approach in dealing with all situations make him/her a unique individual. A positive self-concept and self-image are necessary for optimum growth of the individual child. Our primary goals for the young child is independence and a love for learning.
Work is a child’s play and their method of learning and the most meaningful times a child spends. Children’s work is where he tests, explores, discovers and assimilates the knowledge gained into his own behavior and lifestyle.
All aspects of a child’s development are interrelated and growth takes place in orderly stages: social, emotional, intellectual and physical. (Understanding, loving guidance is necessary for a child to reach his/her full potential.)
A young child’s developmental growth depends on a healthy, loving and caring environment, sound nutrition, and opportunities for stimulating play. This is the right of every child and the responsibility of parents and caregivers.
What Is The Montessori Method?
Dr. Maria Montessori emphasized the need for early education. She wrote, “the most important period of life is not the age of university studies, but the first one, the period from birth to age six.” For that is the time when man’s intelligence itself, is being formed.” Here at 6thAve childcare Montessori Preschool. , we specialize in educating children ages 3 to 6. Our focus lies on this precious time in a child’s life which Dr. Montessori believed that the goal of early childhood was to cultivate the child’s own natural desire to learn through their Sensitive Periods.
Our Classroom
The Montessori class is a child’s sized world. Whatever is in the outside world can be incorporated meaningfully in the Montessori classroom. Careful selection of special materials in the environment allows the child to explore life at a level he can understand.
This prepared environment invites the child to explore at his/her own pace from simple activities to more difficult ones.
There are five distinguishing areas of a Montessori classroom:
1. Practical Life: The exercises in this area enable the child to become independent. It teaches the child to take care of himself and his environment. These exercises help the child develop concentration, coordination, spatial distinction, sequencing, responsibility and self confidence.
2. Sensorial: Children ages 3-5 are using their senses 100% which is why Dr. Montessori created sensorial materials to enhance future learning. The sensorial materials help the child distinguish, classify and categorize sensory impressions by isolating one defining quality such as color, weight, size or texture.
3. Mathematics: These materials help the child make concrete representations of abstract mathematical concepts. The materials allow the child to demonstrate to himself many mathematical operations, which eventually develop into enthusiasm for numbers.
4. Language: The language materials foster and enrich oral language development, written expression, reading skills and the study of grammar. The exercises allow the children to interrelate the phonetic sounds of the alphabet and their symbols in a enjoyable and effortless manner. We introduce Detective Dave as part of our phonetic program.
5. Culture: An appreciation for art, music, dance, history, geography and biology are taught. Recycling and where the child fits into this world is a big part of the program.
